A Former Youth Leader
I happened to attend a meeting for the youth at my church this Sunday. i thought I’ll just scribble down some points i found worth sharing. The talk was by a priest. he just gave some general idea about your attitude towards other fellow beings. so this can be read by anybody(not just Christians). He talked about the ‘having’ and ‘being’ attitudes of people(its little bit philosophical) .. Everybody goes with any one of these attitudes. I’ll say an example. Suppose one sees a flower (say rose) lying on the ground, a person with the ‘having’ attitude would like to ‘have’ the rose for him. he see’s it as an object. Only an object can be possessed by somebody.. whereas a person with being attitude would like the flower to ‘be’ there. he doesn’t want to own it. He is happy in knowing the fact that such a beautiful flower exist and he cherishes in others enjoying its beauty. This is the kind of attitude all needs to have. This can be applied to human beings too. One shouldn’t see another person as an object or a problem to be solved. Once he see’s so he starts losing interest in the other person. Using such an attitude we’ll end up judging a person as good or bad and stop trying to understand him more. an individual needs to be seen as a mystery. a one which’s solving never ends.. we never end up saying a person is bad whereas we’ll try exploring him more even if he seem to be bad at the first sight.
He also mentioned a way of classifying people (into four classes). Firstly the people with the attitude ‘I am okay but you are not ok’. These are the ones who feel that what he does is right and never trusts his fellow being. Never entrusts some work on somebody. Next is the class of people with the attitude ‘I am not okay but others are okay’. These constitute the ones who have lack of confidence in his abilities, he fears to come out of the shell thinking that all others are much better than him and worries to face them. Thirdly those having the attitude ‘I am not okay and others too are not okay’. These are the ones with the most pessimistic attitude, they don’t believe in anybody not even in themselves. They themselves don’t work and won’t let others too. Finally it’s the group of people who have the attitude ‘I am okay and others too are okay’. This is the kind of attitude that’s positive and that results in the maximum output. This group of people belives in themselves and have that confidence to consider others too. They work and let others work.
Just think which one of these attitudes you have. And why don’t you try going with the right one?

HISTORY OF THE PARISH

Elamkulam Little Flower Church is a Roman Catholic, Syro-Malabar Parish belongs to Arch-Diocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The Parish had a very humble beginning in the 1950's with a small Syro -Malabar Community bifurcated from Konthuruthy Parish. Strength of more than 1200 Registered families make this Parish internationally notable worshiping community.

Mar Augustine Kandathil, the Former Arch Bishop of Ernakulam foresaw more than a half a century ago the potential of Elamkulam becoming the centre of city of cochin. Considering such importance of the area , a small chapel in the name of Saint Philomina was constructed here in 1948 and the First Holy Qurbana was celebrated on the 13th of march of the same year. Gradually the syro malabar catholic community increased in the area and that necessitated the construction of church in the place of the Chapel.

With the abundent graces from God Almighty and by the liberal financial backing from Arch Diocese , a well designed church was constructed in 1952. Having the piety for the Little Flower(St Therese of Lisiuex), the Arch Bishop Dedicated the new church to the honour of little Theresa. In the following years , the number of families attached to church witnessed fast increase. later out of enthusiasm and encouragement from Cardinal Mar Joseph Parekkattil, the church established its own cemetary and also founded a Carmalite Convent.

The LF Church which was the felial church of konthuruthy Parish obtained the status of independent and full pledged parish on 1 aug in 1959. The church is now under the forane district of St MARY'S Basilica, Ernakulam.
